In Driebergen, 36 residents have been evacuated due to a major fire. It originated at the end of the night in a laundry on Kleinloolaan. The fire spread to a hardware store, where flames spread meters high from the building, the Utrecht Safety Region reports.
There is also a fireworks store next to the burning buildings. The fire brigade is trying to prevent the fire from spreading there. Across the street is a residential area, from which residents have been evacuated as a precaution due to smoke development and fireworks. They are accommodated in a hotel.
According to the safety region, the hardware store is considered lost. A spokesperson says there is not enough water to completely extinguish the fire. Two platoons of the fire brigade and a large water transport were called in to overcome this. The currently available water is used to keep the flames away from the fireworks storage.
