The major fire in a disposal center not far from downtown Dresden has been extinguished. Around 4 p.m. it was “fire out!”, as the fire brigade announced on Thursday afternoon. Some of the emergency services remained on site for residual extinguishing work and to watch the fire at night. The fire brigade assumes that the camp can be handed over to the operator and the police investigators on Friday. According to the information, no injuries have been reported so far.
The fire broke out just after midnight. When the first emergency services arrived, thick smoke was coming out of the approximately 2,500 square meter hall, and firelight could already be seen, it was said in the morning. Packaging waste from the yellow sack is mainly stored in the hall, but there are also several vehicles and machines there. Within a very short time, the flames broke through the roof of the hall. “Several explosions could also be heard,” said the fire department.
To ensure a stable water supply, several hundred meters of hose were laid and an adjacent street was completely closed. Because of the enormous amount of smoke, residents within a two-kilometer radius of Rosenstrasse were asked to temporarily keep windows and doors closed and switch off air conditioning and ventilation systems. The fire brigade was on duty with about 100 people.
In the early morning, the flames were limited to the inside of the hall and prevented from spreading to neighboring parts of the building, as the fire brigade assessed in the afternoon. After the sides of the hall had been removed with heavy clearing equipment, the waste that was still burning there was taken out with wheel loaders because of the risk of it collapsing and extinguished outdoors. Shortly before 12 noon, the development of smoke decreased significantly and the warning to the population was lifted. (dpa)
