Roofing material and fishing equipment were stored there. A funeral parlor and a residential building are adjacent to the burning building. The flames were prevented from spreading, said Baumann. “Only through a massive firefighting operation using several hand-held fire hoses and an aerial ladder in an external attack was the fire prevented from spreading to the adjacent residential building,” the spokesman continued.

The official disaster warning services had asked the population in the vicinity of the fire to close windows and doors and turn off the ventilation systems. Several people on site are also said to have suffered circulatory problems as a result of the operation. Because a hydrant was damaged, water had to be fetched from hundreds of meters away, according to witnesses. This made extinguishing operations more difficult.

Hall burns in Bergedorf: Firefighter injured in hospital

During the already demanding operation, two firefighters also suffered minor injuries. According to the Hamburg Fire Department, one of them had to be treated by the emergency services for minor burns to his knee and circulatory problems. He was taken to hospital for further examination. The other slightly injured person was treated on site and no ambulance had to be called for him.

Meanwhile, the operation also had consequences in the surrounding area: the Vierlandenstraße was closed, causing traffic chaos in Bergedorf City.
