Much disappointment this Saturday, October 14 at the auction house of the Briscadieu house, in Bordeaux: the painting by Théodore Géricault “and a collaborator” entitled “Twenty-one horse rumps in the stable” was withdrawn from auction at the last minute.
“The applicant has decided to postpone the sale” announced the auctioneer when presenting this highly anticipated lot 63, after the session had started about an hour ago. This work from a private collection was to be priced at 400,000 euros. Around a thousand people were registered for this sale which also took place on online platforms and by telephone.
This painting painted between 1813 and 1816 is a copy of “Vingt- quatre croupes et un poitrail”, also known as “Les Croupes”, painted shortly before by Théodore Géricault and belonging to the collection of Viscount Charles de Noailles. Classified as a national treasure, the original will no longer return to the market. Collectors can fall back on this other version. If only four horses were painted by the master, it was always Géricault who defined the composition of the painting and gave his instructions to his collaborator.
