New York Pizza warns customers about phishing and identity theft after a major data breach. According to the company, 3.9 million customer data was stolen, including email addresses, telephone numbers and delivery addresses. A hacker demands ransom from the Dutch pizza chain.
The data breach is the result of a hack at a supplier of the company. New York Pizza says on its website that the company received a number of emails from a hacker during the night from Sunday to Monday. In it, the hacker threatened to publish or sell a large amount of customer data, and demanded a ransom. A phishing email is now circulating from the address [email protected].
New York Pizza emphasizes to tech website Tweakers that it concerns stolen data, and not ransomware (ransomware).
The leak in the computer systems has now been repaired. The pizza chain has launched an investigation into the hack, filed a report with the police and filed a report with the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
Passwords stolen
Some of the passwords of customers with an account at New York Pizza were also stolen. While these passwords are encrypted, they are not impossible to crack. The company recommends that customers set a new password and do so on websites where they use the same password. According to the company, no payment details were stolen.
