Dublin: Hospitals in a major crisis as the number of flu patients has soared in Ireland. Hospitals are facing a serious challenge in managing the influx of patients. Patients are also suffering due to lack of beds and timely treatment.
Even surgery does not solve the problem. About 300 patients were in the trolleys in the hospitals on Sunday alone. 375 surge capacity beds had to be utilised.
At the same time, the number of flu patients is increasing widely. In the first week of January, 2645 flu cases were reported. The HSE has warned that the number of patients will peak this week. Every hospital faces the problems of not anticipating the surge of patients during winter days.
The HSE has directed hospitals to maximize the number of discharges on weekends to account for patient congestion. The Health Minister had also given this advice earlier.
At the same time, the HSE claims that there has been significant progress in the past six months in increasing hospital capacity and reducing trolleys.
But HSE chief Bernard Goster said the massive increase in lung diseases poses a serious challenge. He also says that a rare new year has passed where the number of trolleys is not in the news.
