“Major Changes Ahead for Ov: Reduced Trams in City Center and Increased Transfers”

Public transport in the city will, if it is up to GVB, undergo a major overhaul in the next two years. The transport company wants to reduce the number of trams, buses and metros in the city from the summer. In 2024, the plan is to make some drastic adjustments to a number of lines.

This is evident from the concept ‘Transport Plan 2023 and 2024’, which is in the hands of The parole. According to the newspaper, the GVB is of the opinion that it is necessary to take a step back. The transport company takes into account that travelers will have to transfer more often in the future. They do say that the transport plan is a draft proposal and that ‘everything can change’.

Fewer trams in the center

An important point in the concept plan is that fewer trams will run through the city center in the future. Some trams that run through the city center will even disappear completely. Line 19 between Diemen Sniep and Sloterdijk, which disappeared from the city center a few years ago, would be scrapped completely. Tram line 7 (Sloterparkbad-Azartplein) would then continue to Diemen and the stretch towards Sloterdijk would have to be taken up by line 12. Tram 12, which now runs between Amstel station and Central, will also disappear from the center.

Line 14, which commutes between Central and Flevopark, must reach Muiderpoort station thanks to a new route and tram 24 would no longer continue to CS from Ceintuurbaan. the GVB also wants to run an extra tram line in the direction of Zuid station.

Combine bus lines and adjust subways

In the draft proposal, the GVB also makes quite a few changes to the bus lines. For example, the carrier wants to combine lines 40 and 64 into one line between the Amstel station and Science Park. Line 62 would also get an adjustment. Where the bus currently runs between Amstel, Zuid and Lelylaan stations, the section between Hoofddorpplein and Zuid station must be scrapped.

With the metro lines, some adjustments will mainly be made to the lines that go to the CS. For example, the North/South line should run more often during rush hours, but line 53 (between CS and Gaasperplas) would run between Isolatorweg and Gaasperplas. With this, the GVB wants to prevent three lines from running simultaneously between Central and Van der Madeweg.
