Major brawl at Kortrijk station

Kortrijk

A large brawl involving several dozen young people took place at the Kortrijk station on Tuesday evening. The police were already able to identify eight people.

Images of a fight on the steps of the station are circulating on social media, between three people on the one hand and a large group on the other. The creator of the video, who wants to remain anonymous, hopes that work will soon be done to create a safer station area. “I know what I’m talking about, six years ago my bicycle was stolen and I was also the victim of senseless violence resulting in a hip fracture. While I was just walking through the tunnel under Kortrijk station with my bicycle.”

Ruth Vandenberghe (Team Mayor), who replaces Vincent Van Quickenborne as mayor because he is on holiday, condemns the facts. “Like everyone else, I was disgusted by seeing the images. The facts must not go unpunished.”

Vandenberghe announces measures. “The police worked last night to identify those involved. I sit down with them to discuss measures. Something has to be done, because unfortunately this is not an isolated occurrence in the station area. It shows once again why an additional police post is needed at the station. We are working on that.”

The police have identified eight people. This concerns both minors and adults. They do not live in Kortrijk. A report was drawn up for the fight. It is also examined whether administrative action can be taken against those involved, for example with place and contact bans. Additional police teams must be present at the station, both visible and discreet.
