Schools, media houses, embassies, the Willy Brandt House and the main train station: numerous bomb threats triggered major police operations nationwide and also in Berlin and Potsdam.
After several bomb threats against various facilities in Berlin, the state security agency is investigating. Schools, media outlets and embassies were affected by the threats, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.
There was also a threat against the main train station, according to the federal police. A spokeswoman said that Deutsche Bahn received an email with a bomb threat during the night. The police then increased the emergency services at the main train station, but ultimately came to the conclusion that travelers were not at risk.
According to the police, the Willy Brandt House – the headquarters of the SPD’s federal headquarters – and several media houses in the capital were also affected. Including the broadcaster RTL. According to a spokesman, the Potsdam police are also investigating a threat against an institution in the media industry. Police headquarters did not provide any details, citing tactical reasons for the investigation.
Penalty of up to three years in prison
The state security agency responsible for politically motivated crimes is investigating charges of disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes. According to the law, a penalty of up to three years in prison or a fine is possible.
The police spokesman was initially unable to provide any information about where and when the threats were received in detail. In the case of the main train station, according to the Federal Police, a corresponding email was received by Deutsche Bahn around 3 a.m. on Tuesday night.
Threats against schools and radio stations
There were also threats against schools and radio stations nationwide on both Monday and Tuesday. There was no actual danger at any of the threatened locations. Little by little, the all-clear was given where the investigative authorities had even assumed there was a threat. And: The authors are unknown and the background is unclear.
In Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, the police evacuated a comprehensive school as a precaution and launched a large-scale operation, but after the investigation the threat was not classified as serious. Threats were also received against schools in Solingen and Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia, and against the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate. No explosives were found at any of the locations.
In Regensburg, there were no classes at a school because of a bomb threat. All students and teachers were taken to another location and the affected school was searched with several explosives dogs. In Augsburg, too, a school canceled classes because of a bomb threat. In Karlsruhe, classes were also canceled after a primary and community school was threatened. A number of children had to be looked after in a community center until their relatives could pick them up. A school in Erfurt in Thuringia was also affected by a bomb threat and classes there were also canceled. Several students and a teacher received medical care here – due to the psychologically stressful situation, said a police spokeswoman.
ZDF in Mainz evacuated 600 employees
Two buildings at the ZDF headquarters in Mainz were temporarily evacuated on Monday due to a bomb threat. Around 600 employees had to leave the ZDF high-rise and the so-called broadcasting operations building, as a spokeswoman for the broadcaster said. The high-rise houses the editorial and administration departments. According to ZDF, the ability to broadcast was not affected. After around an hour and a half, the police gave the all-clear. The operation was ended and the employees were able to return, a spokesman said.
There were initially no indications of suspects. It is also unclear whether there is a connection between the individual cases. It could possibly be about weakening the population’s sense of security and stirring up discontent against Israel, they said
it from security circles to the German Press Agency. An investigation has been launched against the unknown perpetrators of the threats.
According to police, the threats came via email. In some cases the letters made references to the Islamist Hamas, and in one case to the Ukraine conflict.
Bomb threats are not a trivial offense
In Germany, a bomb threat often falls under the criminal offense of disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes (Section 126 of the Criminal Code (StGB)). This can lead to fines or even several years in prison.
In mid-October, a 41-year-old was sentenced to a fine of 2,000 euros for a bomb threat against the Krefeld branch of the Federal Employment Agency. At the end of 2016, a man was sentenced to two years in prison without parole for making several bomb threats against a daycare center and a retirement home in Wolframs-Eschenbach, Bavaria.
