The fixed savings interest rate at two of the major banks is going up again. As of August 15, the interest rate at Rabobank will rise to 1.5 percent. Earlier this month, that bank also raised interest. In a few months time, savers added half a percentage point in interest.

Customers who keep their savings for a longer period of time pin, get even more interest. It can exceed 2 percent for a savings account.

ING also announced today that it would raise interest rates. At that bank, a saver will receive 1.25 percent interest up to 10,000 euros from next month. With higher amounts in the account, the interest decreases fewer.

Savings rates at the three major banks:

ABN AMRO: 1.25 percent (from 1 August)

ING: 1.25 percent interest (as of August 1, on the first 10,000 euros)

Rabobank: 1.5 percent (by August 15)

ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank hold the largest share of savers. But there are also smaller banks, such as the online bank BunQ, that offer higher interest rates. People who have a savings account there receive up to 2.46 percent interest.

The increase is the result of interest rate hikes by the central banks, intended to combat high inflation. As a result, banks in Europe can again raise savings rates for consumers, as can now be seen.

The European Central Bank recently raised interest rates to 3.5 percent. Another increase is expected to be announced this month.
