An official press conference confirmed the information. Gamescom 2020 cannot therefore take place at Koelnmesse in Cologne from 25 to 29 August.

The organizers of gamescom intended to make a decision on the holding of the fair at the Koelnmesse in Cologne. Ultimately, the German government made the decision for them.

Indeed, most German news agencies indicate that the federal government will announce that large gatherings will remain banned in Germany until August 31, 2020. The gamescom, which was supposed to be held from August 25 to 29, could therefore not open its doors. A heavy blow for the show and its visitors, which the organizers had anticipated.

On March 31, the latter had indicated that they greatly accelerated the work around digital formats, allowing the holding of a virtual gamescom. If the ins and outs of this new version of the show are not yet known, we imagine that all the players will react quickly to this government announcement which will probably take place in the next few minutes.

Gamescom confirms via Twitter his intention to organize the fair digitally: “Even if all the details are not known at the moment, the national ban (German, editor’s note) on major events until the end of August will also affect the planning of gamescom 2020. Therefore, gamescom 2020 is sure to take place in digital form! We will provide more information shortly. “
