“When we started this story four years ago, Mairis was one of the most loved athletes in Latvia. One of the few who could single-handedly fill Arena Riga. The documentary was planned as a hero’s story about our Lāčplēsi,” says Semyonov.
How can a folk hero end up in such a controversial position within a few years? Mairi played as big a role in this turning point as she did in her victories. Mair’s peculiar content on social networks and desperate efforts to persuade the scandalous blogger Jack Paul to join the fight earned jokes, but the humor turned into anger when Mair’s activities during the Covid-19 pandemic, his entry into politics in the ranks of the Saskaņa party, his position on the war started by Russia and other sensitive topics were followed. .
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine turned everything upside down. Mairis wanted to stay in the middle and does not take sides. He did not condemn the evil that was obvious. He did not side with the people who believed in him,” Semyonov recalls.
In six episodes, Mair Briež’s career will be reviewed from the very beginning to the peak of achievements. He became the champion three times – until now no one in the Baltic countries had been able to do anything like that. In the series, colleagues, competitors and people who have been by Mairim’s side are addressed. Answers are being sought as to whether the king of boxing drove himself into a dead end and dethroned himself.
