Mainz imposes curfew due to high corona incidence – SWR Aktuell

After the corona incidence was over 100 for several days, the city of Mainz had to react. A night curfew will apply from next Thursday.

According to the city, there was no other way to counter the rising corona numbers. You are currently experiencing a highly dangerous dynamic, said Mayor of Mainz Michael Ebling (SPD). There are also a large number of new infections with the British corona mutation in Mainz.

Curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Mainz residents are therefore only allowed to leave their apartment after 9 p.m. on Thursday in justified exceptional cases. Exceptions apply to all people who have to go to work or come from there. The apartment can of course also be left in the event of a medical emergency. Dog owners are allowed to go for a walk after 9 p.m. And people who want to attend nightly Easter services are also allowed to do so.

Hairdressers remain open, shops are allowed to make appointments

In addition to grocery stores and drugstores, hairdressers, flower shops, hardware stores and dry cleaners will also remain open. According to the city, retailers may continue to offer appointment shopping. However, Ebling assumes that many stores will instead close completely because the effort is not worth it.

Restaurants have to close again

From Maundy Thursday, outdoor restaurants in Mainz will also have to close again due to the increasing number of infections. However, restaurants may offer pick-up, delivery and drop-off services after ordering in advance. Museums, exhibitions, galleries, memorials and similar institutions will remain closed. The new regulations will initially apply until April 12th.

The pandemic is wearing us down. But we have one claim: that daycare centers and schools work.

Michael Ebling, Lord Mayor of Mainz

For the time being, the city of Mainz intends to keep the municipal day-care centers running. Visiting schools and day-care centers is a very important criterion for families in the daily routine, which one does not want to restrict as long as this is possible. However, the city appealed to the institutions not to work with open groups at the moment.

More police checks on weekends

According to its own information, the Mainz public order office wants to discuss with the Mainz police on Thursday how compliance with the corona protective measures can be monitored. Police officers are expected to be more active in downtown Mainz on the Easter weekend.
