Mainz City’s Financial Future: Moving Away from Liquidity Loans and Focusing on Investment

DThe city of Mainz, which is financially well off thanks to the tax revenue bubbling up thanks to the success of Biontech, no longer wants to take out liquidity loans in the future. “We should fundamentally avoid that,” said Mayor Nino Haase of the German Press Agency in Mainz. Municipal consumption should not be financed through loans. “That got us into trouble.” In previous years, liquidity loans made up the majority of the city’s debt, said the independent politician. “There is then no lasting value, so the debt increases.”

The situation is different with investment loans, which the city of Mainz will also take out for larger projects in the future. “You don’t always have the liquidity in your pocket and you don’t always want to finance 100 percent with equity.” Despite all the planning, it must be clear that there will no longer be billions in trade tax revenue quickly.

Despite the good starting position, Mainz has to stretch to remain attractive – so that people who come here for a job also live in the city and pay taxes. To achieve this, living space and educational opportunities would have to be created. Mainz is also tackling the international school project intensively. He is optimistic that something about this can be presented next year. A report is dedicated to the question of where there is still potential for new living space, said Haase. “We still have potential.” He believes 10,000 to 12,000 new residential units are possible in the next ten to twelve years. “The big goal is the compatibility of family and work.”
