Maintain Brain Health with an Active Lifestyle

LENGKONG, AYOBANDUNG.COM – A healthy lifestyle affects many aspects, including intelligence. Active lifestyle can also take care of brain health, according to a new study.

Besides brain health, also can slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease, and dementia that are genetically influenced. In a study just published in the journal Neurology, South Korean scientists tracked 173 older adults with early signs of brain disorders. As many as 27 percent of them have a genetic variant that predisposes people to Alzheimer’s disease.

Using cognitive tests administered at the start of the study, the researchers found that people who were more physically active had less gene-related cognitive decline.

“Problems with thinking and memory skills can negatively impact a person’s quality of life and ability to function, so it is interesting that increased physical activity could potentially delay or prevent cognitive decline,” says study author Jin-Sun Jun, MD, of Hallym University at Hallym University. Parkinson’s disease is a disorder caused by the death of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. The reason cells die is not fully understood; scientists think a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms include tremors, impaired balance and coordination, stiff limbs, and slow movement. The origin of dementia is from terms for decreased memory, judgment, and communication skills.

The new study involved people with the APOE e4 gene variant, a predisposition to developing dementia. Previous research has found that staying active can delay dementia.

In 2012, research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that in older adults, active lifestyle, defined as participation in mental, physical, or social activity, delayed the onset of dementia by an average of 17 months.

The researchers found that people who engaged in more than three types of activity had a greater delay in dementia onset than those who participated less. So, if you want your brain to stay fit, it is advisable to balance an active lifestyle by maintaining a healthy body weight, blood pressure, getting enough quality sleep, and doing regular cardiovascular exercise.
