Maintain Brain Health, Study Suggests Applying the MIND Diet

Launching from Medical Express, researchers at Rush University Medical Center have found that older adults may benefit from a special diet called diet MIND. This diet will remain beneficial even when a person has developed protein deposits known as amyloid plaques and tangles in the brain.

Plaques and tangles are pathologies found in the brain that accumulate between nerve cells and usually impair thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The MIND diet is a combination of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Previous research studies have found that the MIND diet can reduce a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease dementia.

Now a study has shown that participants in the study who followed the MIND diet later in life had no problems cognition. This research was published in Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

“Some people have enough plaques and tangles in their brains to have a postmortem diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, but they don’t develop clinical dementia in their lifetime,” says Klodian Dhana, MD, Ph. Palliative Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush Medical College.

Some have the ability to maintain function cognitive despite the accumulation of this pathology in the brain and our study shows that the MIND diet is associated with better cognitive function independently of the brain pathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease.”

To benefit from the MIND diet, you need to eat at least three servings of whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and one other vegetable each day. They can also have a glass of wine, snack on nuts every day or so, eat poultry and berries at least twice a week and fish at least once a week.

You should also limit your intake of the prescribed unhealthy foods, limiting butter to less than a teaspoon and a half a day and eating less than one serving of sweets and pastries a week, whole cheeses, and fried or fast food.
