The population in Main Franconia will decrease over the next two decades. This comes from a forecast by the Bavarian State Office for Statistics. Around 507,600 people currently live in the region; by 2039 there will be around 5,900 fewer. Despite this slight decline, the state office classifies the population development as stable. However, the region is developing against the trend across Bavaria. Around three percent more people will live here in the next 20 years.
View of the districts and Würzburg
In addition, the population development in the individual districts and the city of Würzburg is different. The Main-Spessart district has seen a significant decline: In 2039, 6,800 fewer people will live in the district – that is minus 5.4 percent. There will also be a small decrease of 0.4 percent in the city of Würzburg – the population is expected to shrink from just under 128,000 to 127,400.
It looks different in the districts of Würzburg and Kitzingen. Kitzingen expects a population increase of almost one percent – 800 more people are expected to live there. In the district of Würzburg, too, around 700 more people are expected to live in 18 years – an increase of 0.4 percent.
It is also clear that the average age in the region will rise by 2039. As of 2019, it is 44.5 years – in 18 years around 47 years. This is due to the fact that on average there should be significantly more elderly people (aged 65 and over). But there is also a slight increase among younger people (0 to 19 years of age).
