Maine Secretary of State Prohibits Donald Trump from Running in Republican Primaries: 14th Amendment cited

Former US President Donald Trump is prohibited from running for president during the Republican Party primaries in Maine.

According to European Truth, this is stated in a message from Maine Secretary of State Shanna Bellows.

She justified her decision by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits rioters from running for office. Trump is accused of inciting the actions of his supporters that led to the storming of the Capitol in January 2021.

“Mr. Trump was aware of the likelihood of violence and at least initially supported its use, as he not only encouraged it with inflammatory rhetoric but also failed to take any timely action to stop it,” the report said.

Bellows said Trump’s periodic calls on supporters to be peaceful and obey law enforcement did not excuse him.

This decision could be appealed in state court and then to the Supreme Court, and the Trump campaign has already confirmed its readiness to do so.

According to CNNTrump campaign spokesman Stephen Chang accused Bellows of “choosing to interfere in the presidential election.”

Previously the Colorado Republican Party appealed to the US Supreme Court asking to intervene after the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Trump from participating in party elections (primaries) in the state.

Additionally, the Michigan Supreme Court denied claim demanding that former US President Donald Trump be banned from participating in the primaries.
