Mail on Sunday wants to use Harry and Meghan’s biography as a defense in case | NOW

The lawyers of The Mail on Sunday, the British newspaper against which Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have filed a lawsuit, have filed a request with the judge to expand their defense, report British media. They think that the recently released biography of the couple, Finding Freedom, confirms that Markle and the prince have knowingly shared information about their private lives with the media.

The case revolves around the publication of parts of a letter that Markle would have written to her father. In the article quoting the alleged letter, the newspaper alleged that Markle accused her father of colluding with her sister Samantha. Markle would therefore want to distance herself from her father, according to the tabloid newspaper.

According to The Associated Press, the newspaper’s publisher, the couple has “extensively collaborated” on the recently released biography written by royalty journalists Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie.

For example, there are several passages in the book describing Markle’s feelings towards her father and other details about the private life of the former actress and the prince. “It would be wrong to disregard this biography,” says the lawyer of the tabloid newspaper.

Meghan and Harry deny cooperation with biography

The Mail on Sunday believes that these passages could only have come about through the cooperation of the couple. Earlier, a spokesperson for the couple said that they did not cooperate with the biography. Their lawyer emphasized this again on Monday during a hearing in the case.

“The only two people who know where this information came from are Durand and Scobie,” said the couple’s lawyer. “They have collected this information and put it together.”

Nor would the authors have seen Markle’s father’s letter. They have only cited quotes in their book that are also in the relevant article from The Mail on Sunday were written.

The lawsuit is expected to take place in January 2021.
