Maik de Boer shaves his beard after 20 years for an excruciating reason

In the episode, candidates are given the second assignment of taking a selfie the roaring twenties would fit. With her photo Maik wants to refer to the fact that homosexuality was still punishable in the 1920s. “Of course I am (homosexual, ed), but then it was not accepted and not even punishable. People thought it was at that moment. fun watching men dressed as women in theaters. But out of the theater it was obviously absolutely not done“explains Mike.

When he tells Geraldine that he will take off his beard, she reacts immediately in surprise. “Do you want to take off your beard ?! But it’s you, Maik.” However, the stylist is willing to give anything to take a picture of “that time”. “In those days a beard was not possible, a mustache was possible, but I also want to leave it. I also like to try on a mustache once in a while, to see if there is still some jaw underneath.”

When Maik shaves his beard in the presence of presenter Tijl Beckand, Tijl notices that he still sees the beard quite well. “I’ll color it, right,” says Maik. Joking: “I don’t want to look old like you.”

Then Maik sees himself for the first time without a beard in years. “What was it like shaving my beard? I thought it was pretty intense,” says Maik, when the damage was done. “It took twenty years, so yes.”

For the shoot, Maik is inspired by a heavy story that means a lot to him. “Three of my friends have committed suicide because of their sexuality. So I know what it’s like to deal with it,” he says. For this reason, Maik wants to take a “dark photo”, which shows that someone feels not accepted. When he thinks about it, he immediately gets excited. “Let’s go again. Howls every episode.”

The jury is also impressed by Maik’s photo. “I see a whole story in this,” says jury president William Rutten. “You can create a beautiful story of your own. You did it very well.”

Then Maik explains the photo he took. “This is perhaps even closer than I wanted to admit. It has everything to do with acceptance. I want to dedicate this photo to those who have never seen it again,” says Maik, who then has to fight against her tears. “This moves me very deeply.” Maik’s photo is rated with a 7.8.
