Last Saturday, the Campo de San Francisco Javier, in Arrecife, became the perfect setting for the return of the Lanzarote Rugby Club (LRC) senior team to the regional competition with the first Rugby X Tournament.
Players from CR Las Palmas, Mahoh de Fuerteventura and the Lanzarote team took part. In the end, the Majorera squad won the tournament after a hard-fought match against the Conejera squad (10-17).
The first half ended with an advantage for the LRC after two trials. In the second half the Majoreros managed to tie the game and gave the finishing touch in the last minute, already in injury time, with a last try that tipped the balance for those from Fuerteventura.
Both teams played at a good level. After the seniors, the U16 players from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote played a match to later give way to the long-awaited third period.
The management of the conejero club wants to “thank CR Las Palmas and Mahoh de Fuerteventura for having been part of this Rugby X Tournament and for the return of the LRC to the senior regional competition. At the same time, we want to highlight two things, one negative and one positive. The state of the artificial grass at the Campo de San Francisco Javier is deplorable, to the point that one of our players had to have fifteen stitches and had to be taken away by ambulance. We know that they are going to start renovating the field supposedly in January but, honestly, not even that game should have been played there. In that sorry state, that field should be closed because that injury is not the only one that has occurred in that enclave, recently a child broke his wrist, they should close it now and not wait until January for another child to get hurt. We want to give the positive part to the world of rugby and to the field cleaning company that thanked the participants for the cleanliness they found in the locker rooms after the tournament, once again demonstrating that the sport of the oval is a sport of principles and values.” .
