Mahfud: Postponement of Elections Will Result in Complex Legal Complications – ANTARA News

Mahfud MD, the Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs in Indonesia, has stated that legal issues will arise if the general election is delayed, as the only way to legally change the election schedule is through a constitutional amendment. Mahfud suggested that amending the constitution to authorise the delay would be more exhaustive and expensive than the election delay itself. The Central Jakarta Court ruled earlier this month that the General Election Commission (KPU) must halt the ongoing election process. The court’s decision was made in response to a lawsuit filed by the Prima Party challenging their disqualification from the 2024 general election. However, Mahfud stated that any changes to the election schedule would require a constitutional amendment, and with various parliamentary parties having expressed their rejection of the election delay, amending the constitution for such purposes would be impossible, as the 2/3 quorum required for deliberation would not be achieved.
