Mahfud MD Reveals There Are BLBI Employers Who Use the Sea as Debt Collateral

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD revealed that there were some obligors/debtors who falsified letters on debt collateral assets of Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI).

The forgery of the letter occurred before the Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance Task Force (BLBI Task Force) is formed.

After the BLBI Task Force worked and dismantled the old documents, there were a number of documents which were declared to be fake and not in accordance with the actual situation.

“Several letters of guarantee for BLBI assets were falsified, transferred, and so on,” said Mahfud at a BLBI press conference, Thursday (20/1/2022).

Mahfud even said that there was a statement letter stating that a land in a certain location was used as collateral for the BLBI debt.

However, upon further investigation, the location was the ocean, not land as stated in the letter.

“There is a land guarantee in the form of a statement, the land there is a total of several kilometers from this, after being investigated by agrarians it turned out to be the sea, right, this is actually a crime,” said Mahfud.

As for the case, the BLBI Task Force in collaboration with law enforcement officials has arrested several related individuals.

It has been recorded that up to now, 10-11 persons have been arrested at the Criminal Investigation Department.

The BLBI Task Force has been criticized for only being able to repay 14 percent of the total debt

Mahfud said this is one of the achievements BLBI task force who worked until the end of 2023, although there were still many who criticized the performance of the new task force, it was able to return state money of Rp 15.11 trillion or 14 percent of the total debt.

“Perhaps for the common people this is considered a problem for the BLBI, but for us the achievement with the arrest of several individuals who falsified land asset documents, has now been arrested and has been detained,” he said.

He further emphasized that the BLBI Task Force will ensure the return of state rights through a series of measures such as blocking, confiscation, and selling the assets of debtors and obligors.

In fact, it does not hesitate to take criminal steps if it is proven that they have violated the law. Currently, the government will focus first on asset recovery. The legal action will be the last step after the BLBI Task Force stops working in 2023.

“That’s because the guarantee was later transferred or falsified, (can be punished). But later, whether he wants to replace the guarantee or not. Anyway, everything will be accounted for at the end of 2023,” said Mahfud.
