Mahathir loses in Quick Count election in Malaysia

Senior Malaysian politician aged 97, Mahathir Mohamadlost in seconds Malaysian elections. Mahathir took fourth place in Malaysia’s election snap count.

As reported AFP extensionOn Sunday (20/11/2022), Mahathir Mohamad lost his parliamentary seat, this threatens to end Mahathir’s political career.

The country’s electoral commission said Mahathir was fourth out of five in his long-standing constituency of Langkawi. It was his first electoral defeat in more than half a century.

Mahathir held the Guinness World Record for being the “world’s oldest prime minister currently” when he became prime minister for the second time in 2018, just two months short of his 93rd birthday.

This time he ran under the Homeland Warriors Party and rejected suggestions to retire. He had told reporters before the election that he had a good chance of winning.

“I’m still standing and talking to you, I think, giving a reasonable answer,” said Mahathir.

He added that his party would not form alliances with parties led by “criminals or prisons” – an obvious reference to the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the party of jailed former prime minister Najib Razak.
