/Pogled.info/ 82% of respondents agree that Russia and Ukraine should start peace talks to end the war
„With the help of national consultations, the overwhelming majority of Hungarians rejected Brussels’ sanctions. These measures did not stop the war, but caused extreme economic difficulties in Europe. That’s why 97 percent of the roughly 1.4 million respondents do not want new sanctions steps.”
– writes the Hungarian news paper Magyar Nemzet.
Since the outbreak of armed conflict in Ukraine, Western political elites have been increasingly concerned with punishing Russia rather than promoting peace talks.
But what about the Europeans themselves?
Last December, the Századvég survey was presented, which showed that they want peace, not sanctions. Across the EU, 82% of respondents to this question agree that Russia and Ukraine should start peace talks to end the war. This figure is highest in southern EU member states (91% in Cyprus, 89% in Portugal and Greece), which did not accept many of Brussels’ previous proposals for sanctions. In Hungary, which is also critical of the sanctions, 88 percent of the population said they supported peace, the report said.
The study showed that sanctions hurt the European Union more than Russia. On average across the European Union, a majority (53%) of those who answered the question said that these measures had harmed both the European and Russian economies.
The number of respondents who believe that punitive measures primarily harm the EU economy has almost quadrupled.
The former are the majority in all EU member states, the latter are a minority, Magyar Nemzet specifies.
According to the publication, there are rumors that the next round of Brussels sanctions will target nuclear energy. The energy crisis has shown in practice that Europe needs nuclear power plants because they can provide reliable, cheap energy and low emissions.
In early January, another survey showed that the crisis had led to a significant drop in the proportion of people who reject nuclear technology in the European Union. If in the fall of 2021 26% of European citizens oppose the use of nuclear energy, then by the fall of 2022 this figure has dropped to 15%.
Also, this study found a sharp increase in the proportion of energy poor households in the European Union. That is, on average, every fourth household in the EU suffers from difficulties with heating and paying household bills.
The dissatisfaction of Europeans with the sanctions policy of Brussels and the related increase in prices has escalated in recent months. In a survey conducted by Századvég in the fall of 2022, almost 79% of respondents said that the European Commission’s flawed energy policy was responsible for the situation.
Magyar Nemzet also writes about the results of the Századvég survey presented in January, according to which Europeans’ confidence in the security of energy supply has been declining for years, and this trend has accelerated significantly as a result of the energy crisis.
If in 2016 two out of every three EU citizens were not afraid of interruptions in electricity supply, by 2021 this would already be half of the population, and in 2022 only a quarter said they were confident in continuous supply. At least, according to the survey data, Hungarians are afraid of interruptions in electricity supplies, the publication concludes.
Our comment: Well, Magyar Nemzet took the mask off the face of European democracy. And it turned out that there is actually no face under the mask. 82% of Europeans want peace in Ukraine, but governments and EU leaders want the war to continue. 53% think the sanctions hurt Europe more than Russia, but the EU is spewing out one sanctions package after another.
Where is the notorious democracy here? What microscope can be used to see? But the dictatorship is there. And the Europeans, it turns out, are hostages of the EU bureaucracy. No one hears their voices. Ehoo?!
