Harry Maguire first told his story on Thursday about his arrest in Greece and the events surrounding it. The Manchester United captain said he even feared for his life.
“I thought we were being kidnapped,” Maguire said in an exclusive interview with the BBC. “We were on our knees with our hands in the air and they started beating us, especially on my legs. I didn’t think for a second that it could be police, so I tried to run away in panic. I feared for my life. . “
Maguire spent two days in a cell last week after being arrested for involvement in a brawl on the Greek island of Mykonos. According to Greek media, he has also attacked several police officers with two others. However, he said he was innocent and was released last Saturday.
“It was terrible to be in jail for two nights,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. That was the first time I’ve ever seen a cell inside at all and I don’t want to go through that again. I don’t wish this on anyone.”
Last Tuesday, the 27-year-old defender was sentenced by a Greek court to 21 months and 10 days in prison for aggravated assault, resistance to his arrest and attempts at bribery after his arrest. However, he does not have to serve that sentence because it is a prison sentence of two years or less and it is his first offense in Greece.

‘You only make excuses if you have done something wrong’
Maguire does not think he should apologize for his behavior. “You only make them if you have done something wrong. The situation has clearly put one of the biggest clubs in the world in trouble, so I regret that the supporters and the club had to endure this.”
Because of the judge’s ruling, national coach Gareth Southgate decided to remove Maguire from the English selection. Manchester United have announced that they will be talking to the player about his role as captain.
