MagSafe external battery would be compatible with reverse charging

Apple is currently working on a prototype MagSafe external battery for the iPhone 12. According to an informant, this battery would be compatible with reverse wireless charging. Concretely, the accessory can simultaneously charge another device (AirPods, Apple Watch…) in addition to the iPhone.

A few weeks ago, a line of code referring to a MagSafe external battery appeared in the beta version of the iOS 14.5 update. The existence of this accessory for iPhone 12 was quickly confirmed by Bloomberg. According to information obtained by the media, Apple has been working on this mysterious external battery for a year. Like the MagSafe compatible card holder, this battery has just stuck on the back of the iPhone thanks to the magnets.

Shortly after Bloomberg, Jon Prosser, a well-known informant despite a mixed history, confirmed the arrival of a MagSafe external battery during a podcast. According to the leaker, Apple has reportedly developed two prototypes of external battery. One of the prototypes designed by Cupertino engineers embeds reverse wireless charging.

A MagSafe battery capable of recharging AirPods or an Apple Watch simultaneously

Ultimately, the MagSafe external battery would be both capable of recharging an iPhone 12 thanks to the MagSafe and accessories with QI induction charging. We think in particular of an Apple Watch, an AirPods or AirPods Pro case, or another smartphone. According to Prosser, Apple would market two versions of the accessory: a low-cost standard model only capable of charging iPhone 12s and a more expensive high-end version with reverse charging.

This hypothetical battery would come enrich the catalog of MagSafe compatible accessories sold by Apple in the coming months. On its Apple Store, the Cupertino giant already sells several products using the magnets of the iPhone 12, including a MagSafe Duo charger to charge an Apple Watch simultaneously. Note that some third-party manufacturers, including Anker, already market an external battery that relies on MagSafe technology. Priced at $ 39.99, the Anker Magnetic Battery offers a recharge of just 5W. It also has no reverse charge.
