Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Hits Melonguane, North Sulawesi: BMKG Reports Aftershocks

Earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 7.4 rocked the Melonguane area, North Sulawesi. The epicenter of the earthquake was 960 km northeast of Melonguane.

“Depth 132 Km,” wrote BMKG on the social media account X @infoBMKG, as seen Monday (4/12/2023).

The earthquake occurred at around 02.48 WIB. The coordinates are 12.61 North Latitude and 127.40 East Longitude.

BMKG also recorded the occurrence of aftershocks in the Melonguane area, North Sulawesi. An earthquake measuring 5.6 occurred almost two hours after the first earthquake rocked Melonguane.

This second earthquake occurred at around 04.43 WIB. The epicenter of the earthquake was 502 km northeast of Melonguane, North Sulawesi.

“Depth 92 km,” wrote BMKG.

BMKG recorded that this second earthquake was at coordinates 8.5 North Latitude and 129.96 East Longitude. BMKG notes that the initial information on this earthquake prioritizes speed, so the results of data processing are not yet stable and may change as the data is complete.

It is not yet known whether there were any casualties or the impact of the damage caused by this earthquake
