There was an earthquake near the Groningen village of Zijldijk tonight. According to measurements by the KNMI, the quake had a magnitude of 2.1.
Bee RTV North dozens of reports came in from residents who had felt the earthquake. “I heard a thump and the house was shaking,” says someone from Zijldijk. “A big blow”, a resident of the nearby village of ‘t Zandt described the quake. “Two heavy thumps and a strong, short vibration,” said another resident of ‘t Zandt.
In addition to the above places, the reports also come from surrounding villages such as Godlinze, Oosternieland, Zeerijp and Doodstil.

Initially, the KNMI reported that the quake had a magnitude of 2.2, but that was later adjusted to 2.1.
As a result of gas extraction, earthquakes occur more often in Groningen. The ten strongest measured quakes since 2006 had a magnitude between 3.1 and 3.6.
