A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 Magnitude (M) shook Afghanistan. The earthquake left hundreds of people dead.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as reported by Reuters news agency on Wednesday (22/6/2022), the M 6.1 earthquake shook densely populated parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday (22/6/2022). .
The USGS said the earthquake occurred about 44 km (27 miles) from the town of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan at a depth of 51 km. The earthquake is said to be the deadliest in Afghanistan since 2022.
The European Center for Mediterranean Seismology (EMSC) said in a Twitter post that the shaking was felt over 500 km by an estimated 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
According to witness reports posted on the EMSC website and Twitter, the tremors of the earthquake were also felt in the Afghan capital, Kabul, as well as the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
“The shaking was strong and long-lasting,” a witness from Kabul said in a post on EMSC.
Photos posted on social media showed several houses badly damaged in a remote rural area.
It is known that Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, which is located near the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
