Magnetic helmet shrunk malignant tumor in world’s first test

Technology has often been a powerful ally in the various fields of medicine. Indeed, we already know many devices capable of detecting a multitude of diseases, as well as acting against them. This time, in a world first, a magnetic helmet succeeded in shrinking a malignant tumor.

The device can be easily used at home.

The brain is the main human organ, but also one of the most sensitive. For this reason, all surveys and methods aimed at its preservation become very relevant. As part of the latest neurological discovery, the researchers used a helmet that generates a magnetic field, in an effort to shrink a malignant tumor.

Although the 53-year-old patient did not survive due to an unrelated injury, the brain autopsy found the procedure removed 31% of the mass in a short time. This test was therefore the first non-invasive procedure to try to cure glioblastoma, a malignant cancer of the brain.

Patient who used the magnetic headset in the tests

Malignant tumor reduced with a magnetic headset

The magnetic headset has three rotating magnets connected to an electronic controller, based on a microprocessor and powered by a rechargeable battery. The patient wore the helmet for five weeks in a clinic and then at home.

Initially, the therapy promoted by the magnetic headset was used for 2 hours a day, after which it was increased to a maximum of 6 hours. During this period, the mass and volume of the patient’s tumor shrank by almost a third.

According to researchers, who have received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to use the headset, it may one day help treat brain cancer without resorting to radio or chemotherapy.

Our results open up a new world of non-invasive and non-toxic therapy with many exciting possibilities for the future.
