Magic Castle it’s a game for PS1 with a rather curious history. This is the 8-month project of a group of Japanese developers who tried to find a publisher for their work in 1990, unfortunately without success. The abandoned project was recovered after 20 years by PIROWO, who decided to complete the game and publish it online, so as to give everyone the opportunity to try it. Four generations of consoles later.
Magic Castle was a rather peculiar project. First, it was created using Net Yaroze, a tool that Sony made available to amateur developers to create games for its console. Despite being the “amateur” project this RPG had some pretty cool elements, like one dynamic soundtrack o the ability to change the position of the graphical interface. For this the developers decided to propose it to different publishers, but without success. Sony was interested in the group of developers, but not in their project, which was then abandoned.
After 20 years one of them found the game code, a RPG with 4 character classes and levels with randomly generated elements, and decided together with PIROWO to complete the development and publish the game online on the Internet Archive, where it is possible to run it thanks to an emulator.
A this address you can download Magic Castle.
The game does not currently support 4 players and has no Japanese translation, but they will be coming soon. Ironically, in 2021 Magic Castle can get a post launch support that he could not have achieved in the days of the first PS1.
