One of the most important festivals in Assam, Magh Bihu celebrates the end of the harvest season in the month of Magh i.e. (between January and February). It is also known as Maghor Bihu as it celebrates the change in rotation of the earth which ends the cold winter and the start of the spring season. This year, it will be celebrated on January 14.
Magh Bihu is one of the three vital Bihu celebrated by the Assamese community. The word Bhogali Bihu is taken from the word Bhog which means pleasure and eating. Well, you can see, the celebration includes lots of food and dancing with family and friends. The bonfire is made of green bamboo, hay, firewood and dried banana leaves. As part of the tradition, devotees like to take a bath before making the traditional bonfire.

The eve of Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is called Uruka, it is the last day of Pousha, a lunar month. A big party is organized and a bhog is made on the first night of the festival. Adults like to make makeshift thatched huts called ‘bhelaghar and a bonfire is made with bamboo and hay called Meji. The party takes place around the meiji where people like to sing songs and dance their traditional folk dance. The next morning, people like to take baths, and meiji is burned afterward. Traditional Assamese games are played such as buffalo fighting and tekeli bhonga (breaking the pot). Devotees pray to their ancestral gods for their blessing and forgiveness.
