Passengers aboard a Delta Air Lines flight experienced a horrifying ordeal on Tuesday when maggots started falling on them from an overhead bin. The unsettling event unfolded after a fellow traveler brought rotting fish in their carry-on luggage. The incident forced the plane to turn around just an hour after departing from Amsterdam on its way to Detroit.
Witnesses Describe the Shocking Scene
Philip Schotte, a passenger on the ill-fated flight, recounted the moment when a woman, seated across the aisle, began trying to fend off the maggots. Initially, Schotte thought it was some form of prank, but quickly realized the situation was far from amusing. Speaking to WJBK-TV in Detroit, Schotte revealed, “I don’t really know what was going through my mind. I was trying to process it – disgust is one thing of course.”
Source of the Infestation
Flight attendants swiftly tracked the origin of the maggots to an overhead compartment. Inside one of the carry-on bags, they discovered a rotting fish cleverly concealed within a newspaper wrapping.
Airline Apology and Statement
Delta Air Lines confirmed the incident involving flight DL 133 in a statement issued to NBC News. The airline apologized to the customers aboard the flight, stating, “We apologize to the customers of Flight 133 on Feb. 13 as their trip was interrupted due to an improperly packed carry-on bag.” Furthermore, they explained that the aircraft had to return to the gate for cleaning after the occurrence, and affected passengers were accommodated on the next available flight.
Flight Details and Prompt Action
According to the flight tracking site FlightAware, the Amsterdam to Detroit flight, which departed at 10:11 a.m. local time, was forced to turn back and land at the same airport less than two hours later. Prompt action was taken to remove and dispose of the infested carry-on bag.
