In 2019, our country submitted 11,882 Dublin requests, questions to another European country to take care of an asylum seeker staying in Belgium. This mainly concerns people who were already registered as asylum seekers elsewhere in Europe and can only obtain refugee status there.
The share of those so-called ‘Dubliners’ grew to 43 percent of all our asylum seekers last year. However, less than a tenth of the 11,882 people for whom a Dublin application was made have returned to the competent country.
At the beginning of this year, Belgium has already tried to increase the return by excluding ‘Dubliners’ from reception. Before that, however, De Block’s administration became the past few weeks condemned several times by an employment judge.
Threats with incarceration
In order to prevent ‘Dubliners’ from disappearing under the radar, De Block now wants to lock them up if necessary. The Immigration Office will provide additional places in the closed centers for this purpose. And if an asylum seeker does not cooperate in his return process, the transfer period is systematically extended to eighteen months. Now, according to De Block, asylum shoppers often try to abuse the standard six-month period, after which Belgium does take responsibility for them.
