Mager Makes Young People Vulnerable To Diabetes

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Diabetes often considered the same as heart disease and cholesterol, are both considered a disease of the elderly. But in reality, diabetes and other diseases can also be experienced by young people, at the age of 15 or 20 years

Endocrine, metabolic and diabetes division staff, Department of Internal Medicine, RSCM-FKUI, Martha Rosana said, in recent times diabetes has been detected in many elderly people, but over time diabetes is also experienced by many young people, even at the age of 15, they have been diagnosed with diabetes. non-congenital diabetes.

“More and more here, in Indonesia many (young people with diabetes) a quarter of the total diabetics in Indonesia are young and some are even 15 years old,” Martha said in a media briefing held by Tropicana Slim virtually, Friday (12/11) .

Currently, said Martha, there are 10 million people with diabetes in Indonesia. It’s just that this is the number of patients detected, meanwhile he believes there are more than 8 million people with diabetes out there who are not detected by health workers.

“And of that number, a quarter of them are not even 20 years old. We also predict that in 2025 people with diabetes will be detected to reach 18 million of all Indonesian citizens,” he said.

Why are more and more young people getting diabetes?

Lifestyle is a major factor in a person getting diabetes. Undeniably, an unhealthy lifestyle, eating unhealthy foods in large quantities and rarely moving are the main factors for young people to get diabetes.

“Over time because of the consumption of unhealthy foods, the pancreas cannot produce insulin properly, resulting in an increase in blood sugar, resulting in diabetes,” he said.

In addition, many young people are also not aware of the risk factors for developing diabetes that threaten them. For example, having a parental history of diabetes but not maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

In fact, he said, it is very important to be aware of the risks you have by regularly checking for diabetes at the hospital and staying active.

“Rarely physical activity, lazy, finally overweight, current snacks are high in sugar, so indeed the current trend of food is higher in sugar, should start raising awareness,” he said.
