The operation in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt is ending after 34 years.
The last German transport company ends the operation of the Tatra T6A2 tram. The Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB) transport company announced the ceremonial end of operation of Czechoslovak production trams on Sunday, January 28.
Transport company is preparing a series of farewell rides for Sunday. The operation of vehicles produced by ČKD Tatra is ending in the capital of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt after almost 34 years. They ran for the first time on May 2, 1990 on the then line 7 between Neustädter See and Salbker Platz. They should be in regular operation until the end of March, then one tram will be used only for teaching and another for grinding rails.
Magdeburg gradually took over 12 trams and six towing cars, also bought some discarded from Berlin. According to the transport company, the last trams will reach the deadline for the next inspection. “Due to their age and poor supply of spare parts, it is no longer economical to carry out further inspection,” explained the transport company in a press release. They are gradually being replaced by the new Flexity trams from Alstom.
T6A2 trams first appeared in the then GDR in 1986 in Dresden, where they had already been decommissioned. Most of them were driven in Berlin.
