Magdeburg – In Milan there is a vertical forest, the “Bosco Verticale”. Singapore is known for its numerous green skyscraper facades and as early as 1978 Friedensreich Hundertwasser clad buildings in Barcelona with a wall garden.
Now Magdeburg is also to get its first vertical garden. The housing association Die Stadtfelder (DSW) is planning to green a house wall at Olvenstedter Platz.
The choice of motif stands for the start of a green future
For this, the Magdeburg-born artist Alexander Hanke designed a motif with an astronaut and rocket, which symbolizes the start of a green future. “The rocket is greened, the astronaut is painted by the artist,” explains Judy Kolberg from the housing association. For DSW, the chosen motif stands for the housing cooperative’s claim to actively deal with the issues of the environment, climate protection and sustainability and to implement solutions for a greener future.
The choice of the gable to be greened was made together with the district management. “The selected house wall stands prominently and prominently on Olvenstedter Platz for a good community in an attractive residential area,” said the DSW.
Specialist companies from Germany commissioned
For the greening of the house gable, the architects from meta Architektur, commissioned by the housing association, were able to win a team of experts: The company Vertiko from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald has been working for years to make cities more livable and has already implemented numerous facade and roof greening projects , explain the city fields. Her specialty is vertical indoor and outdoor greening projects. These are areas that usually have no other function as unused walls or exterior walls.
With the ingenious greening, the air is cleaned of pollutants and dirt, the energy costs of the buildings are reduced and the heating effect of cities is reduced. In addition, green facades are still something special today and attract attention. Vertiko developed the greening system for the building of the housing association Die Stadtfelder on Olvenstedter Platz. The installation will be carried out from the beginning of August by the Wuppertal company Leonhards Garten und Landschaftsbau. Leonhards has been designing landscapes on and on buildings for years, explains Judy Kolberg. The facade greening not only looks good, it promotes a healthy microclimate and protects the facade like a green coat from moisture, hail and heat. In summer it has a cooling effect, in winter it insulates the facade and contributes to lower energy consumption.
The substructure provides support for the green facade
“The fresh green embeds the building in the landscape and forms a vertical biotope in which, for example, birds feel at home. Since the greening is applied to a structure, there is no risk of the facade being damaged. ”The automatic irrigation will present a challenge, as the selected gable end of the house faces south. However, the years of experience of the companies involved help here.
Costs are not passed on to the tenants
The facade greening project on Olvenstedter Platz is funded by the urban development subsidy with 75 percent of the costs. The irrigation costs for electricity and water are covered by the housing association Die Stadtfelder. The maintenance costs for the automatic irrigation will not be included in the utility bill for the tenants, the company explains.
