After losing the Club World Cup final, Magdeburg quickly returned to everyday league life – the Lions are struggling against Hamburg.
After missing a record in the dramatic final of the Club World Cup, SC Magdeburg quickly got back on track. The Magdeburgers won in their own hall against Frisch Auf Göppingen with 31:24 (16:11). The reigning German champions achieved their third victory in the fourth game of the season. Bennet Wiegert’s team had only lost against the record champions from Kiel.

In the first game after the final defeat against MKB Veszprem, Magdeburg built up a three-goal lead after twelve minutes played and increased the score for Göppingen to five by the break. In the second section the gap even grew to twelve points.
The Magdeburg victory was therefore never in danger. The best thrower on the SCM side was Icelandic Omar Ingi Magnusson with seven goals, five of which he scored from seven meters. Goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez Ferrer was also another guarantee for Magdeburg’s success with 15 saves. For the Göppingen team, who have now suffered four defeats in a row and are still waiting for their first win of the season, Marcel Schiller was the best scorer with five goals.
Just a few days ago, Magdeburg suffered a bitter defeat in the final of the Club World Cup. The team led by national handball player Lukas Mertens lost 33:34 in overtime against the Hungarian representative from Veszprem. So they narrowly missed out on their historic fourth World Cup title in a row.

Appelgren gives Lions their next victory
Also on Monday evening, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen won their home game against HSV Hamburg 30:27 (16:13).
The team around national player Juri Knorr struggled in the second half, almost gave up a five-goal lead towards the end and was able to thank substitute goalkeeper Mikael Appelgren for their fourth win of the season. With his saves, the Swede prevented Hamburg from equalizing.
