Giovanni Brusca, now 64 years old, was for many years the leading killer of one of the clans in the mafia in Sicily, before betraying his old friends and becoming a police informant.
He is believed to have killed over a hundred people, and is called both the human butcher (u scannacristiani) and the pig (il porco).
Last week, he was released after serving a 25-year sentence. He was released due to a section of the law that was fought for by a public prosecutor he himself has killed.

– Must be changed
“I become speechless when I think that Brusca is a free man,” said Governor Nello Musemeci of Sicily. The Guardian.
– People say “that’s the law”, but if it is obviously wrong, then it must be changed, Musemeci says.
The clause that allowed Brusca to walk out of the gates of the prison as a free man was meant to make mafia members silence their brothers. The law states that if you cooperate with the police, you will be able to be released from prison before the sentence is completed.
Several hundred kilos of explosives
The man who fought for this change in the law was named Giovanni Falcone. He worked as a public prosecutor and judge and dedicated his life to the fight against the Sicilian mafia.
He was killed in 1992, when a bomb weighing several hundred kilos killed him, his wife and three security guards on a highway outside Palermo.
In the hill above the highway, Brusca stood watching. He was the one who had planted the explosive in a culvert under the road.

This is the club the police fear
– An animal
When Brusca switched sides and began cooperating with the police, he was quite clear on what his role in the criminal networks had been.
– I’m an animal. I have worked all my life for Cosa Nosta, he said, according to The Republic.
– I have killed over 150 people, and I can not even remember the names of all, he said then.
Among the most high-profile killings that Brusca is said to have carried out was the murder of an eleven-year-old boy. The boy was the son of a former mafia member, who had begun cooperating with the police.
Brusca then tried to dissolve the body of the eleven-year-old in acid.
