Mafia: Definitive Edition has a more elaborate story and longer missions than the original

After both the remaster of Mafia II and the reissue of Mafia III previously appeared as part of the Mafia Trilogy, we are now waiting for the remake of the first part of the series. Mafia: Definitive Edition will be released in two months and now that the release is slowly but surely approaching, developer Hangar 13 is also increasingly talking about the game. This was how it became this week clearly that the remake includes several options to make the game more accessible, in addition to a standard difficulty level similar to the original.

In an interview with USgamer Haden Blackman – the president of Hangar 13 – has also shared some more details about how Mafia: Definitive Edition compares to the original when it comes to content. The new edition of Mafia is not a simple remake that just looks nicer and is more accessible. It turns out that players can also expect a more extensive story, as well as longer missions.

As for the story, Blackman explained that the remake pays more attention to characters that weren’t very prominent in the original. As an example he mentions Sarah, the girlfriend of main character Tommy Angelo. While she didn’t play a major role in the original, you’ll learn a lot more about this character in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

“For example, Sarah, the love interest in the original, she doesn’t get very much screen time, but she’s the heart of why Tommy Angelo is doing what he’s doing. At the beginning of the game you learn that he’s trying to arrange a way out of the life and he’s doing it all for his family, so we wanted to make sure that as a player you knew what it was that he was trying to protect. We wanted to make sure that Sarah got more screen time; she’s in the game more, has an understandable kind of role in the lowercase family and uppercase Family.”

In addition to the story, the missions in Mafia: Definitive Edition have been expanded compared to the original that came out in 2002. Blackman said in the interview that the missions have been carefully reviewed and that content has been added where possible. The developer has taken into account that this would not be at the expense of the core of the missions in relation to the story.

“We took a hard look at each mission and looked at whether or not we could add additional set pieces. If there was additional content we could put into those missions to flesh them out a little bit, or add a couple more memorable moments to each without sacrificing the core narrative beats or the intent of the mission of the story overall.”

All in all, it seems that Hangar 13 has done a lot of work on the remake of the original Mafia. How this will eventually emerge will be shown from August 28. Mafia: Definitive Edition will be released on that day for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
