Maestro, Saltburn, and Barbie emerged as the big winners at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton. The event celebrated the outstanding achievements in the field of makeup and hairstyling in the entertainment industry. Let’s take a closer look at the winners and highlights of the evening.
Film Winners:
Netflix’s Maestro and Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn stole the spotlight by winning awards in multiple categories. Maestro, a biographical film about Leonard Bernstein directed by Bradley Cooper, won Best Period and/or Character Make-up and Special Make-up Effects. Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic thriller, Saltburn, took home the awards for Best Contemporary Make-up and Contemporary Hair Styling. Warner Bros’ hit film Barbie also received recognition for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.
Notably, none of the film winners were present at the ceremony to accept their trophies. However, it is worth mentioning that historically, many film winners at the MUAHS Awards have gone on to win the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar. This year, The Eyes of Tammy Faye took home the Academy Award, despite being nominated for three MUAHS Awards.
Television Winners:
In the television categories, The Morning Show won for Contemporary Hair Styling, The Idol for Contemporary Make-Up, The Crown for Period and/or Character Make-Up, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story for Period and/or Character Hair Styling, and The Last of Us for Special Make-Up Effects.
Dancing with the Stars dominated the Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series categories, winning awards for Contemporary Make-Up, Contemporary Hair Styling, and Period and/or Character Hair Styling. However, Saturday Night Live broke their streak by winning Best Special Make-Up Effects and Period and/or Character Make-Up.
Other Highlights:
The event was hosted by comedian Melissa Peterman, who entertained the audience with her humor and wit. The ceremony began with a mix-up when presenter Kate Linder announced the wrong winner for the Make-Up prize. The first award of the night eventually went to The Young and the Restless. Swanthula Boulet and Dracmorda Boulet received the Best Make-Up for Daytime award for their work on The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula.
The MUAHS Awards also honored industry veterans with lifetime achievement awards. Kevin Haney, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning makeup artist known for his work on Driving Miss Daisy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, received the 2024 MUAHS Lifetime Achievement Award. Ora T. Green, an Emmy-nominated hair stylist recognized for her contributions to Star Trek and Blade, was also honored.
The evening concluded with a tribute to makeup artistry legend Michael Westmore, who received the Vanguard Award. Westmore’s illustrious career spans five decades and includes iconic works such as Raging Bull and the Star Trek series.
