Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards: Maestro and Saltburn Are Big Winners
11th Annual Awards Recognize Excellence in Makeup and Hair Styling
Netlfix’s Maestro and Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn took home top honors at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. The prestigious ceremony held at The Beverly Hilton celebrated the outstanding achievements of talented artists in the film and television industry.
Maestro and Saltburn: Dual Winners with Astonishing Performance
Maestro, directed by Bradley Cooper, emerged as the champion in the Best Period and/or Character Make-up and Special Make-up Effects categories. On the other hand, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic thriller, Saltburn, won the Best Contemporary Make-up and Contemporary Hair Styling awards, proving its creative brilliance in the industry.
Barbie: Warner Bros’ Great Gerwig-Helmed Megahit
In another delightful achievement, Barbie won the Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling award. Directed by Great Gerwig, this Warner Bros’ megahit added another accolade to its impressive collection.
Absence of Film Winners Highlights Their Monumental Achievements
Regrettably, none of the film winners were present at the Beverly Hilton to accept their well-deserved trophies. Their dedication and talent have significantly contributed to the success of the films but circumstances prevented them from being there in person.
The Missing Link: Makeup and Hair Styling Oscar
The Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards have been a reliable predictor of the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, with the film winners often going on to claim the prestigious Academy Award. However, for the first time since 2014, the trend was broken this year, with the Oscar going to The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Although Maestro is the only MUAHS winner nominated for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, it faces tough competition from Golda, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and Society of the Snow.
2023 MUAHS Awards: Elvis and Other Winners
The 2023 MUAHS ceremony showcased remarkable talent and outstanding artistry, with honors presented to films such as Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. These winners left an indelible mark with their exceptional character hair and makeup work.
The Humorous and Talented Melissa Peterman Returns as Host
Comedian and Young Sheldon co-star Melissa Peterman delighted the audience with her hilarious hosting skills for the ceremony. In her opening remarks, she playfully joked about her enthusiasm to be back among the “beautiful people” at The Beverly Hilton.
Unexpected Mix-up Adds Humor to the Evening
A slight mix-up occurred early in the ceremony when presenter Kate Linder accidentally announced the wrong winner for the Make-Up prize. However, the lighthearted moment showcased the genuine camaraderie among the artists and presenters, with co-presenter John Brotherton playfully teasing the situation.
Young and the Restless and Boulet Brothers Errored but Prevailed
After the mix-up, the Best Make-Up for Daytime award was rightfully presented to Swanthula Boulet and Dracmorda Boulet for their exceptional work on The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula. The Young and the Restless eventually won in their respective category, with Lauren Mendoza, Justin Jackson, Michelle Corona, and Diana Santana taking home the Best Hair Styling award.
Outstanding Achievements in Television
The television series winners were The Morning Show for best Contemporary Hair Styling, The Idol for best Contemporary Make-Up, The Crown for best Period and/or Character Make-Up, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story for best Period and/or Character Hair Styling, and The Last of Us for best Special Make-Up Effects.
Television Special Awards: Dancing with the Stars and Saturday Night Live Take the Spotlight
Dancing with the Stars dominated the Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series categories, winning three awards for Contemporary Make-Up, Contemporary Hair Styling, and Period and/or Character Hair Styling. However, Saturday Night Live broke their potential sweep, winning the Best Special Make-Up Effects and Period and/or Character Make-Up awards.
Great Shows and Commercials Acknowledged
American Horror Story: Delicate won awards for Best Hair Styling and Best Make-Up in the Commercials & Music Videos categories. Finally, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical impressed in the Theatrical Hair Styling and Make-Up categories.
Exceptional Artists Honored with Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards
The 2024 MUAHS Lifetime Achievement Awards recognized two icons in the industry. Kevin Haney, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning makeup artist, was honored for his incredible work on notable productions such as Driving Miss Daisy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Hocus Pocus 2. Ora T. Green, an Emmy-nominated hair stylist, was celebrated for her contributions to productions such as Star Trek: Nemesis, Blade, and Good Times.
Tributes and Appreciation for Outstanding Artists
Several esteemed friends and colleagues paid tribute to the accomplished award recipients. The heartfelt speeches and videos honored the incredible talent and incredible impact of these artists, showcasing their unparalleled contributions to the industry.
