Maestro, Saltburn, and Barbie Take Home Top Honors at 11th Annual MUAHS Awards

Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards 2024: Netflix’s Maestro and Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn Win Big

Maestro and Saltburn were the big winners at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton. The winners were announced at the prestigious event, and Maestro and Saltburn emerged as dual winners, with Maestro taking the Best Period and/or Character Make-up and Special Make-up Effects categories, and Saltburn winning Best Contemporary Make-up and Contemporary Hair Styling. Meanwhile, Warner Bros’ hit film Barbie secured the Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling award. It’s worth noting that none of the film winners were present to receive their trophies.

Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Awards Traditionally Predict the Oscar Winners

Since the modern MUAHS Awards began in 2014, one of its marquee film winners for makeup or hair has gone on to claim the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar every year – except in 2022. This year, the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar was awarded to The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which was nominated in three categories at the MUAHS Awards but failed to secure any wins. However, Maestro has been nominated for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, and it will be competing against Golda, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and Society of the Snow for the coveted award.

Maestro’s Success and Other Winners at the MUAHS Awards

Maestro enjoyed a double victory at the MUAHS Awards, and it is the only film amongst the winners to be nominated for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar. Another notable winner was the film Elvis at the 2023 MUAHS ceremony. Last year also saw Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever secure awards in their respective categories. The winners in the television series categories included The Morning Show, The Crown, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and The Last of Us, among others. The awards also recognized the outstanding work in commercials, music videos, and theatrical productions.

Lifetime Achievement Awards

The 2024 MUAHS Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to two distinguished artists. Kevin Haney, widely known for his remarkable contributions to films like Driving Miss Daisy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Hocus Pocus 2, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Makeup. Haney, an Oscar and Emmy winner, also played a crucial role in developing Jiminy Glick for Saturday Night Live. Ora T. Green, an Emmy-nominated hair stylist with an impressive portfolio that includes Star Trek: Nemesis, Blade, and Good Times, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Hair Styling. Green’s exceptional work has inspired aspiring hairstylists, and her commitment to excellence is a testament to her passion and perseverance in the pursuit of artistic excellence.

Recognition for Michael Westmore and In Memoriam Segment

The MUAHS Awards also bestowed the Vanguard Award upon the renowned Michael Westmore, a makeup artistry genius. With a career spanning five decades and numerous accolades, Westmore has left an indelible mark on the film industry, from his work on the striking makeup for Robert De Niro’s Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull to the iconic characters in the Rocky series and Star Trek. His incredible contributions prompted the Movie Academy to establish an annual Oscar for makeup and hairstyling, and the Vanguard Award recognized his groundbreaking artistry. The ceremony also included an emotional “In Memoriam” segment, paying tribute to industry professionals who sadly passed away.

Chartered in 1937, the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild encompasses more than 2,300 artisans in the global entertainment industry.
