Caracas. The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, affirmed this Tuesday that he is willing to overcome the differences that his government had with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and that he hopes to receive him soon in Caracas, after a proposal made to him by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, at a meeting in Caracas.
“I have received the proposal to invite again the opening of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to be in our country, I agree, that we overcome the differences, the conflict that we had and I am prepared to receive to Volker Türk’s envoy soon, as always the doors of the Miraflores Palace (seat of government) are open,” said Maduro during a meeting with Khan.
In this regard, the president asked Türk to rebuild communication bridges based on respect, dialogue and communication.
“Of course, whenever, however, and wherever, I’m here,” he commented.
On February 15, the Maduro government suspended the activities of the United Nations Human Rights office in Caracas, after Türk expressed concern and described the detention of activist Rocío San Miguel as a “forced disappearance.” and asked the staff to leave the country within 72 hours.
In this regard, Caracas considered that the organization had an abusive attitude towards the internal affairs of this nation.
In 2019, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding that established a framework for future discussions and cooperation, and allowed for a continued presence in the country of a team of UN human rights officers.
