Maduro will receive Petro this Tuesday in Caracas

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has reported that he will receive his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, in Caracas this Tuesday, within the framework of the meeting between the Foreign Ministers of both countries, Yvan Gil and Luis Murillo, respectively, to strengthen bilateral relations.

«Today there was an extraordinary meeting between Murillo and Gil. Tomorrow Petro visits us, we will discuss all the issues,” Maduro said, before mentioning that they will address energy projects, border security, economic issues, diplomatic cooperation and the strengthening of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Likewise, the Venezuelan head of state has stated that Caracas and Bogotá have joint objectives and that “no one will separate them from that roadmap”: “There are many points in common and if there is any difference, the difference is welcome,” he stressed.

This visit occurs after Petro raised the tone in his criticism of the decision of the Venezuelan electoral authorities to block some of the opposition candidacies for the presidential elections on July 28. Last week, he described the disqualification of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado as an “antidemocratic coup.”

«The right to choose is not only individual. It belongs to society and today this discussion, which is very well evident in the events in Venezuela with Mrs. María Corina and others, were previously disqualified from participating in electoral campaigns by administrative authorities,” she criticized.

Petro also recalled that other Venezuelan opposition figures such as Leopoldo López were also disqualified, just as, he said, they tried to do with him in Colombia. “Exactly the same thing that they wanted to disqualify me here,” he denounced.

Another of Maduro’s allies, his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, asserted “that there is no legal or political explanation to prohibit an opponent from being a candidate,” referring, on this occasion, to Corina Yoris, substitute of the María Corina Machado disqualified.
