Nicolás Maduro asked on Monday the Venezuelan migrants who are in New York City to return to their country because he considers that the economy, one of the main reasons that triggered the diaspora, is prospering.
He made the request during a tour of the Anzoátegui state for his weekly program With Maduro +, broadcast on the state channel Venezolana de Televisión. While driving a van, accompanied by his wife Cilia Flores and escorted, the president assured that Barcelona “is more beautiful” than the Big Apple.
“Barcelona is more beautiful than New York. If (the state) La Guaira gives Miami three stops, Barcelona kind of gives New York three stops,” he said. “This is very beautiful, spectacular, and the economy is thriving in the states. It is one of the miracles that we have achieved, with effort,” he added.
Maduro also assured that Venezuelan migrants They could return to their country “no later than a year” if the United States lifts “all sanctions” established to the South American nation.
“I say it to the elite that is in the United States, I say it to the governments, the one that is now or the one that could come: Lift all the sanctions against the economy and you will see that within a year at the latest this problem will end and all those migrants return to Venezuela, with investment and growth,” he expressed.
The president also denounced what he considers a “demonization” campaign against citizens who fled the Venezuela crisis and suggested that the economic crisis, supposedly exacerbated by international sanctions, has been a determining factor in the exodus.
He argued that lifting sanctions would trigger an increase in foreign investment and economic growth that would facilitate a return to “a prosperous country.”

In his statements, the minister warned about what he considers a new wave of xenophobia that is accompanied, according to him, of an implicit threat from the United States government, that since Barack Obama’s decree seeks to “stigmatize” Venezuela.
He assured that the sanctions imposed by the United States are the main cause of migration and criticized those who supposedly requested and defend them.
The Maduro government spokesperson also highlighted that the diaspora is part of a double phenomenon.
“It was induced by the economic war and is the only migrant population that returns to its country of origin. However, neither the United States nor the Venezuelan far right have done anything to ease sanctions and allow the conditions for mass repatriation. The propaganda use of Venezuelan migration has a very clear objective: to justify any aggression against our country,” he expressed.
