Caracas. The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, assured this Wednesday that the opposition leader María Corina Machado fled to Spain.
“The old man (former candidate Edmundo González) left a month ago and Sayona (in reference to María Corina Machado) also left, he fled, first he sent someone very close to him, he went until the end, a tavern in a place from Spain, he got there,” said Maduro during an official event.
Machado has not appeared in public since August and has only released videos and interviews through his social networks.
Earlier this month, the opposition leader assured that she has no plans to leave Venezuela.
In August, the Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal investigation against Machado and González for the alleged commission of the crimes of usurpation of functions, dissemination of false information to cause anxiety, instigation to disobedience of the laws, insurrection, association to commit a crime and conspiracy .
For his part, González, the former presidential candidate of the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD center), arrived in Madrid on September 8, as a political asylum, after the Venezuelan government granted him safe passage.
Caracas assured that it granted the document “for the sake of tranquility and political peace” of the country.
Venezuela held presidential elections on July 28, in which Maduro obtained 51.95 percent of the votes, while González, his closest contender, reached 43.18 percent of the votes, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE).
The PUD ignored the results and released CNE minutes that supposedly would prove that González was the winner of the elections.
