Maduro administration accused of lack of support after fire in Mexico

Venezuelans and activist groups demanded this Thursday the lack of support from the Nicolás Maduro administration after the deadly fire in Ciudad Juárez, in Mexico, which left 40 migrants dead.

The group demanded rapid action by the competent officials in the areaespecially to speed up the work of identification and repatriation of fatalities.

The event occurred last week at a station of the National Institute of Migration (INM) of Mexico.

Several of the relatives also assured that there are those who come to offer them help to find their relatives and repatriate them on the condition of collecting 40% of the compensation that the Mexican authorities will give them.

“There are cases, as with the brothers from Venezuela, in which there are no concrete actions. We are concerned that the Venezuelan Consulate is not present and the federal government does not have a clear presence for them“, commented Father Javier Calvillo, director of the Casa del Migrante de Juárez.

They also added that the Venezuelan migrants are in total abandonment because the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which has indicated that it will support the relatives with the transfer of the bodies; however, the State Attorney General’s Office clarified that the procedures must be managed by the Venezuelan authorities.

The fire of March 27 killed 40 migrants, including 6 Hondurans, 7 Salvadorans, 18 Guatemalans, one Colombian and 7 Venezuelans.

In addition to the total number of deaths, the incident left 27 injured, of which 23 remain hospitalized.
