Mads Mikkelsen is looking forward to playing Johnny Depps in the Fantastic Beastsseries. The actor calls it challenging, but at the same time finds it very interesting, he tells us Entertainment Weekly.
Depp was forced to leave by Warner Bros last month after an ongoing fight between him and his ex-girlfriend Amber Heard. Mikkelsen was announced shortly afterwards as the actor’s successor.
The 55-year-old Dane calls this follow-up “difficult”. “We are still figuring out exactly how to shape it. A bridge needs to be built between what Johnny has done and what I’m going to do.”
The actor thinks it is important that his role does not deviate too much from what Depp has already portrayed “masterfully”.
Mikkelsen admits that he found it quite difficult to take over a role in this way. “It was quite shocking indeed, if you see what has happened (between Depp and Heard, ed.). It’s just a very sad situation and that’s why I wish them both the best. I hope they will recover soon. “
Fantastic Beasts 3 will hit theaters in the summer of 2022.
